new arrivals: live life on your own terms – 16/5

this week there are three magazines all new to MagShuffle and are exceptional in their originality. Avaunt, Acclaim and Union all reveal lives lived against the grain, whether that’s through Afghanistan’s skate culture, the small communities of Australia or leaping cars in Wisconsin, this week is all about fringe cultures, global exploration and creative lives. MagShuffle is our new mix and match magazine subscription service, where you can personally curate your year of monthly deliveries from a roster of 140+ magazines.

avaunt – #6

we welcome Avaunt magazine to MagShuffle this week too. 226 pages of exceptional photography and features from Laos, Tibet, Afghanistan, and under water. It’s a supremely impressive issue full of insight and engagement with the nuances of different cultures. Otto Barkham’s beautifully written essay on skateboarding’s cross-pollination to areas of the world that we might not expect, including Afghanisation, Cuba, Morocco and Bolivia. There are stunning photos from Levon Biss’ ‘Microsculpture’ series, which adorns the issue’s cover and reveals insects at a scale never seen before. Also: AI in music; a Cold War CIA operation involving a helium balloon and flying pig; ultra marathons in the desert. A must have issue and our current magazine of the month.

acclaim – #38

another new magazine debuting on MagShuffle. Acclaim leads with Vince Staples as its feature story in an edition that profiles people, collectives and projects that redefine paradigms and explore new ideas on their own terms. As well as Staples, there’s a superb photo essay on immersive 3D film, Via Alice which explores the stunning beauty of Australian communities and their environment. Elsewhere they chat to London grime artist, AJ Tracey; singers Kelela and Moses Sumney; and King Krule. A fine edition for music lovers.

union – #5

issue 5 of Union is the first edition of the magazine to enter MagShuffle’s roster. Typically there’s some wild events and cultures profiled, including one Wisconsin small town’s leaping car festival; the running man who breaks novelty world records; prostitution in Vegas; catfish noodlers; and the town where the dead talk. Great photography throughout gives a taste of lives lived on their own terms.
